How do I sign a resource to an entire section of a project without having to assign it to the individual activities in Primavera? That’s what we’re going to show you how to do in this lesson.

We’re going to bring together the concept of a resource assignment along with a special activity type called a WBS Summary activity so that we can assign resources to large sections of projects without having to assign that resource to a whole bunch of individual activities. Let me show you what we’re talking about.

In my Railcar Maintenance Facility project open and you probably have seen this project in so many other courses but you know, it’s a long big project. And it has major components like Engineering, Construction, Procurement, etc. Let’s say I want to track my own time as a project controls resource on this project, where would I assign myself? Would I assign myself to every activity in the project?

Lord, no. That would take a long time to set up and it will also be a lot of information to manage so we need a better way. What we’ll do is we’ll use a special activity type called the WBS Summary activity type. Let me show you how that activity type works. Let’s go back and expand everything back. Back up to the top of my project. What we’ll do is I’ll add an activity right underneath the header WBS of the entire project.
